Advance Directly to Go!

If you’re a regular at MetroEast community media, you are probably familiar with the four core classes that we offer: Basic Studio, Intro to Studio B, Field Camera, and Basic Editing. But you may not be aware that we rotate advanced classes into our monthly schedule, too. There are usually two single-session classes per month that cover a wide range of advanced topics. They’re designed to build upon skills developed in the preliminary classes, and to encourage more creative, complex productions.

----------

Here’s what we currently offer:

Character Generator

This standalone workshop demonstrates the ins and outs of creating intricate titles for a studio show. Learn to build upon existing templates, customize text such as credit rolls, and even add graphic elements like digital photos. Become an expert CG operator to make your next studio show look stunning!

Studio Audio

In this workshop, students will first review the basics of Studio A’s mixer, then gradually learn more advanced functions. Additionally, different types of microphones will be explained, so that the trained audio tech will know what to use in any given situation. For anyone who doubts the power of good audio, this class may change your mind!

Switcher

This class is the first step in becoming an expert technical director. It’s intended to review and expand upon switcher concepts taught in the Basic Studio class, as well as to introduce new topics. Subjects include chroma key, picture-in-picture, digital video effects, and even basic motion keyframing. Not for the faint of heart!

Micro-Mobile

When shows can’t come to the studio, the studio can go to them! The micro-mobile workshop is a two-session course that takes an in-depth look at pre-production and setup for the three-camera portable studio. Learn how to set up safely at a venue, and work effectively with a larger crew. If there is an event that you think demands more than just a single camera, the micro-mobile may just be your cup of coffee.

Producing for the Studio

In this workshop, producing takes the spotlight! The "Producer" on a studio program is responsible for organizing and developing the content of the show. Students will examine various different styles of studio shows, consider ideas for developing program content, learn methods for recruiting crew and talent volunteers, and create a rundown for a show.

Studio Camera

This standalone class will teach advanced techniques for operating the cameras in Studio A. Students will learn to capably use the cameras controls through guided instruction, and learn what it takes to follow a live conversation. Be aware that this class will only certify you for the Studio A cameras, but it’s a great doorway into volunteering on other producers’ shows!

Studio Directing

In a complex studio production with a large crew, it’s critical to maintain stability throughout the show. This workshop provides tips on how to improve shot selection for a multi-camera production, as well as how to communicate and direct others without sounding too bossy. Like a boss!

Advanced Editing

This class explains advanced features within Final Cut Pro, such as “keyframing”, 3-point editing, and chroma keying. Go beyond the basics to give your show a documentary or movie-style look, while keeping your sanity intact! Students in this class are assumed to have basic editing experience, and it’s highly recommend to make a show or two before signing up.

Video on the Internet

This workshop is a chance for producers to prepare and upload videos to popular Internet sites like YouTube and BlipTV. Students will learn about "codecs", "compression", and possibly even “chocolate chip cookies”! MetroEast reserves the right to remove the segment about chocolate chip cookies.

I hope that these advanced classes have sparked your enthusiasm for producing a show at MetroEast Community Media. If you would like to find out which classes have been rotated in each month, you can check our website or pick up a flier at the front desk.
